Safeguarding in the Marine Training Corps
Safeguarding at the Marine Training Corps
A Safe Environment for Your Child
At the Marine Training Corps, the safety and wellbeing of every cadet is our highest priority.
We understand that when you trust us with your child, you expect a safe, structured, and supportive environment. Everything we do — from training nights to camps — is designed with that responsibility in mind.
Our aim is simple: to provide a place where young people can learn, grow, and thrive safely.
Our Commitment to Safeguarding
We are fully committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of all young people by:
- Providing a safe and inclusive environment
- Following strict safeguarding policies and procedures
- Ensuring all volunteers are suitable and properly trained
- Responding quickly and appropriately to any concerns
Safeguarding is not just a policy — it is part of our culture.
Safe and Suitable Volunteers
All adult volunteers undergo a thorough recruitment process before working with cadets.
This includes:
- Enhanced DBS checks (or equivalent)
- Identity and reference checks
- Safeguarding and induction training
Volunteers are not allowed unsupervised access to cadets until all checks are completed.
In addition:
- Safeguarding training is refreshed annually
- Volunteers are expected to follow a strict Code of Conduct
- Standards are monitored and maintained at all levels
Supervision and Support
Your child will always be supervised by trained adults during MTC activities.
We ensure:
- Appropriate staff-to-cadet ratios
- Qualified and experienced leadership
- Clear structure and organisation during all activities
Cadets are supported at every stage, whether during regular training nights or extended activities such as camps.
Safe Activities and Training
All MTC activities are carefully planned and risk assessed.
We follow a recognised Safe System of Training, which ensures:
- The right people are leading activities
- Equipment is safe and appropriate
- Activities are delivered correctly
- Environments are suitable and controlled
We also adapt to changing situations using dynamic risk assessments to ensure safety at all times.
Health, Medical, and Welfare
Your child’s wellbeing is extremely important to us.
- First aid is available at all activities
- Trained personnel are always present
- Emergency services are contacted when required
If your child becomes unwell or injured:
- You will be informed as soon as possible
- Appropriate care will be provided
- Further medical support will be arranged if needed
We ask parents and carers to:
- Provide accurate medical information
- Inform us of any changes to your child’s health
This helps us support your child safely and effectively.
Speaking Up and Being Heard
We encourage all cadets to speak to a trusted adult if they have any worries or concerns.
Our staff are trained to:
- Listen carefully and respectfully
- Take all concerns seriously
- Provide support and reassurance
If a concern involves safety or wellbeing, it may need to be shared with appropriate safeguarding professionals — this is always done in the best interests of the child.
Raising a Concern
If you ever have a concern about your child’s safety or wellbeing, we encourage you to speak to us.
You can:
- Contact your local unit directly
- Email: admin@marinetrainingcorps.org.uk
All concerns are taken seriously and handled by trained safeguarding personnel.
If a child is in immediate danger, please contact:
- 999 (emergency services)
- 101 (police non-emergency)
You can also seek independent advice from organisations such as the NSPCC.
Our Approach to Bullying
We have a zero-tolerance approach to bullying.
We work to:
- Prevent bullying through education and leadership
- Respond quickly to any concerns
- Support all young people involved
- Promote a culture of respect and inclusion
Every cadet has the right to feel safe, respected, and valued.
Working Together with Parents
We believe safeguarding is a shared responsibility.
We work in partnership with parents and carers by:
- Keeping you informed
- Encouraging open communication
- Supporting your child’s development
- Being available to answer questions or concerns
Your trust is important to us, and we are committed to maintaining it.
